The FAA used to make their test question banks publicly available; however, they have not done so for many years. In fact, the FAA has recently gone through their entire database and changed every single test question and answer in order to eliminate test question memorization. No one, including test prep educators, has access to the FAA question banks. To be a safe and competent pilot-in-command, and to pass your required tests, there is no shortcut. 8. What is IFR, What Does IFR Stand For?
IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules (as opposed to VFR, or Visual Flight Rules). This set of rules governs how a pilot flies when the weather is poor, and they cannot conduct the entire flight by simply looking out the window. Pilots must operate under Instrument Fight Rules when the weather is classified as IMC, or Instrument Meteorological Conditions. IMC means the conditions are poor enough that VFR flying cannot be done safely. To fly under IFR, both the pilot and the aircraft must be certified for IFR. This means that if the pilot and aircraft are IFR capable, they can operate safely in a wider variety of weather conditions and circumstances. An IFR rating is an extremely valuable safety tool for any pilot.
